The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist. On Thursday 24 th October we bring BAFTA nominated film composer Simon Boswell to the Cellar Arts Club in Worthing to discuss and play his Defining Ten. Simon was originally signed to Transatlantic Records in the 70s as a solo artist whilst still at college, releasing the album “The Mind Parasites”, before forming the new wave/ power pop act Advertising in 1977 and touring extensively with Blondie. After this he worked as a producer in the UK and Italy and 1985 his film composing career took off, working with a variety of cult directors including Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Michele Soavi, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Richard Stanley, Clive Barker and more including scoring Danny Boyle’s debut film Shallow Grave, the award winning The Crying Game, 90s cult cyberpunk film Hackers and collaborated with Orbital on the score for Octane. His TV work has included scoring the BAFTA nominated The Lakes and collaborated with poet laureate Simon Armitage on Songbirds and Pornography: The Musical. Through his other music work he has worked with a wide variety of people, including Elton John, Dolly Parton, Amii Stewart, Marianne Faithful, Italian megastars Nino Buonocore and Renato Zero and members of Blur, Echo and the Bunnymen and the Sex Pistols. He has also worked on two projects with the Vatican, putting speeches and singing from Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI to his music and visuals. We are very excited to be spending several hours in Simon’s company where he will be discussing the 10 songs which have inspired and defined his incredibly varied career, followed by a special stripped back performance of select pieces from his film work.
