The Cellar’s annual night celebrating mid-’80s indie, exemplified by the NME’s famous C86 cassette tape. The world called them ‘shambling’ but they did not care. Opposed to the clean, bland pop sounds of contemporary pop, and influenced by post-punk, The Byrds, Jesus & Mary Chain, and the Velvet Underground, a generation of boys and girls, some of them in paisley shirts with bowl haircuts, picked up their cheap guitars and created a lo-fi word-of-mouth scene of fanzines and fandoms. Creation was built on it and it influenced everyone from Kurt Cobain to Belle and Sebastian to the Riot Grrrl movement. Tonight at the Cellar, resident DJs Pete Fij & Caspar Gomez welcome SPECIAL GUEST Anne Mari Davies of Sarah Records band The Field Mice. We will be travelling back in time to take you to C86… and beyond Expect Soup Dragons, Close Lobsters, The Loft, Baby Amphetamine, The Weather Prophets, The Pastels, Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Talulah Gosh, BMX Bandits, Motorcycle Girl, We’ve Got a Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It, Mighty Mighty, The Primitives, The Pooh Sticks, Half Man Half Biscuit, Stump, The Shop Assistants, The TV Personalities and many, many more makers of fuzzed, inventive non-hits of indie music’s defining period (NB this year we’ll be dropping a few – not too many – C86-ish tunes released since the ’80s). Ticket details soon…
